It seems to me that a cup of tea is the most holiest of emblems. It is the place of renewed friendship or of friendships just beginning. The start of a fated meeting which leads to “me too” moments, or the times we “remember when.” It is a source of healing in spirit and in body, where one comes to lay their burdens down. I have become unraveled over many a cup of tea, been invited into healing space. I have grown into a mother over another cup, and joined my heart to other mothers in turn. Each cup is poured, as each story deepens.
I have started a new journey with nothing but a shallow cup, only to have my tea and life filled overflowing. I have been favored with a deepening friendship over a medley of tea. I have had a tea over sickness, and even death. I have been poured a cup of tea as my new baby nursed full before being passed around, handed arm to arm between cooled sips. One will never leave tea time empty, there is always someone to fill.
Now I tea with a tribe of strong and beautifully diverse women, as our children run in between legs and snacks, no longer just theirs but ours as we lean into each other. The spaces in our week are stretched thin but space is saved to meet for tea. It is communion of the mothers.
There was a time when I did not know that I needed to pause for such a thing as tea. But, now I embrace it as a way of life. I pause for tea in the hard of the day, when renewal and rest is needed. I meet for tea in the everyday of the afternoon, where community is grown. I run around, taxiing here and there, and remember my tea as a reminder to breathe deeper and slower. Tea is a means of connection. Tea is a comfort in the quiet spaces, where no words are found. Tea soothes the hard emotions and awakens a sense of depth in the mundane. We breathe in that first aroma and by the time we are done that last sip, we are better for it.
Tea is a metaphor for love.
Have you breathed in a cup of tea this week? Have you poured a cup of tea out?
